Temporal lobe is involved in many behaviours that are considered especially well developed in humans, including semantic processing, language, and conceptual categorization. Besides, the temporal lobe also is involved in the visual and auditory integration, memory, and emotion. Neuropsychiatric disorders always have these high level cognition impairment. Therefore, temporal lobe dysfunction may be a hub of pathophysiology mechanisms of neuropsychiatric disorders. Advanced neuroimaging techniques such as MRI with high spatial and temporal resolution, determining the pathophysiological mechanism of neuropsychiatric disorders have become increasingly possible. Thus, neuroimaging studies focusing on the temporal lobe deserve to be carried out.

This Research Topic aims to elucidate the role of temporal lobe dysfunction in neurophysiology mechanism of neuropsychiatric disorders, and explore the potential biochemical or neuroimaging biomarkers in temporal lobe for diagnosis and predicting treatment response or outcomes. Temporal lobe, a big part of the brain, including the primary auditory cortex, Broca’s area, Wernicke’s area, and a part of the limbic system (hippocampus, amygdala). Increasing evidence indicates these brain areas of the temporal lobe have important roles in neuropsychiatric disorders. However, most of the results were inconsistent. Furthermore, the functional and anatomical connectivity within the temporal lobe and the temporal lobe with other brain regions were ambiguous. Multivariate pattern analysis techniques, machine learning, and artificial intelligence enable us to explore the potential biomarkers in the temporal lobe for diagnosis and predicting treatment response or outcomes based on individual level. These techniques shine light on “precision medicine”. Thus, this topic aims to collect studies which applied these developing techniques and biochemical or neuroimaging techniques to explore the important role of the temporal lobe in the pathophysiological mechanism of neuropsychiatric disorders and its value in diagnosis and predicting treatment response or outcomes.

We will welcome original research studies, methodological articles and reviews about abnormal structure, function, and metabolism of temporal lobe in neuropsychiatric disorders and its value in building diagnostic and predicting models. We seek cross-sectional and longitudinal studies with interventions including pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, surgical treatment, and invasive or non-invasive brain stimulation conducted with biochemical and neuroimaging techniques, and multivariate pattern analysis techniques, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. This Topic also welcomes novel methods measuring biochemical and neuroimaging indicators in the temporal lobe.
