Previously considered “the forgotten valve” because of frequent medical treatment or even no treatment at all, the tricuspid valve has recently seen a surge in scientific interest.
It has been clearly shown that the conservative approach has several limitations and results in progressive worsening of cardiac, renal and liver function, deeply affecting patient prognosis. Recently, tricuspid regurgitation has gained importance due to several percutaneous options becoming available, able to mitigate symptoms, reduce hospitalization and improve quality of life. As it affects prognosis, appropriate diagnosis, risk stratification and timely intervention are of paramount importance to ensure adequate quality and longevity of life. This Research Topic will focus on diagnostic aspects of tricuspid regurgitation, and appropriate management in different settings, looking at tricuspid valve interventions, both surgical and percutaneous ones.
This Research Topic will specifically discuss the problem of quantification of tricuspid regurgitation and evaluation of right ventricular function in this context, the clinical importance of significant tricuspid regurgitation and the role of imaging, not only echocardiography. This Research Topic will also discuss patient selection between surgery and transcatheter interventions and factors affecting mortality in this population. Moreover, a detailed description of available devices will be addressed. Other important aspects to be highlighted are the role of tricuspid regurgitation in the context of nowadays very diffuse mechanical circulatory support.
Led by an international team of experts, the editors of this topic are interested in receiving original research manuscripts, as well as meta-analysis and review papers.
