Renal diseases are debilitating as they reduce quality of life. In addition, terminal manifestation resulting in dialysis increases socio-economic burden of the country. Renal diseases have become pandemic in the past decade. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important that researchers should come up with new targets, biomarkers, and effective therapeutic treatments. Recently tubules have received focused attention in regards to the pathobiology of nephropathy. Among distal and proximal, the latter one is more vulnerable to acute and chronic injury as they are packed with mitochondria, and rely heavily on oxidative phosphorylation. In the setting of acute and chronic injury, the antioxidant system depletes, and oxidant stress increases, hence subjecting tubular cells to death.
In this Research Topic we would like to invite authors to contribute to our knowledge of the role of various types of cell death in the progression of renal injury. Apoptosis, necroptosis, ferroptosis, pyroptosis, autophagy are different types of cell deaths involved in kidney injury and each type of cell death is unique in the setting of specific cause of renal injury. It will be interesting to explore comprehensive mechanisms behind these bioprocesses. The in-depth research investigations would certainly help clinicians to come up with novel therapeutics interventions. In view of this we would like to invite potential authors to contribute their innovative and thought-provoking research in our Research Topic: ‘Myriad Types of Cell Death in Nephropathy and Their Veiled Potential’.
