Torquetenovirus (TTV) is the most frequently identified member of the Anellovirus family of endogenous small DNA viruses. Although its presence is readily detected in the majority of healthy individuals, its possible involvement in pathogenesis remains an unresolved issue. Is TTV a participant or merely a bystander in disease processes? Another fundamental question of major clinical interest is whether the detection and measurement of the TTV titer in biological fluids and tissues is a sensitive and clinically relevant biomarker of immune status and disease prognosis. The purpose of this Research Topic is to highlight new investigations related to the mechanisms of TTV persistence and the clinical relevance of determining the TTV titer in various disorders and diseases.
