About this Research Topic
The autonomic nervous control of the cardiovascular system plays a major role in the adaptation of the organism to the changes in external and internal environment. Its dysfunction is the major pathophysiological factor in the development of neurocardiovascular diseases.
The aim of this Research Topic is to present the state of the art on the role and nature of the neural component in these diseases, from the molecular to the systemic level. Neurocardiovascular disorders can be classified as sympathetic vs. vagally mediated disorders, though in many disorders both systems are dysfunctional. A number of molecules along the signaling pathway can be functionally modified and be the background of the predisposition, faster progression or complicated form of the disease. On the other hand an integrative approach on the systemic level brings an insight into dynamics and interaction of neural control systems with feed forward and feed back properties. Coordinative role of autonomic nervous system is the background of the fact that neurocardiovascular pathologies accompany other system diseases. A major significance of these findings is the successful and fast translation of theoretical knowledge into the field of diagnostics and therapy. Novel approaches of in silico design of therapeutic candidates for neurogenic hypertension and vasovagal syncope will be discussed in this Research Topic.
Finally, this Research Topic, with an integrative view on neurocardiovascular pathologies, will offer new concepts for improvement of the disease outcomes by new proposals for gene, pharmacologic and behavioral modulation of the autonomic nervous system. On the other hand this Research Topic will trace new pathways for novel research, especially in the field of integrative neuroscience of the autonomic nervous system.
