With this Research Topic we encourage submissions describing the development, implementation, and/or evaluation of Web-based trainings to develop public health capacity in a variety of settings and contexts.

We define the key elements of our topic area as follows:

• Online = Web-based format available for use on desktop computers, laptop computers, mobile smartphones, tablets, etc.

• Training = course designed to develop one or more competencies and/or recommend strategies for implementing knowledge

• Public Health = activities aimed at improving the health of specific populations rather than single individuals in isolation

• Capacity Building = development of knowledge, awareness, skills, and/or attitudes to increase preparedness for planned activities and unexpected challenges

Successful submissions will contribute unique value to the field of public health promotion and education by introducing readers to the basic elements of innovative online education programs for public health capacity building across a variety of sectors. This research topic collection can promote dialogue between scholars with experiences in different online training types, and inspire collaboration on sophisticated approaches to online public health training. Papers should thus emphasize the potential generalizability and utility of specific approaches to training format, content, and assessment for a variety of audiences.

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
