Although the standard model for particle physics successfully describes the interactions and compositions of the elementary constituents of matter, there are many unanswered questions. Many astronomical observations indicate the existence of dark matter and there are extensive theoretical models about it, but its fundamental characteristics still remain a mystery. In addition, we still do not know the basic properties of neutrinos, whether they are Majorana or Dirac particles, what absolute mass scales are, etc. These questions have been investigated from the overlap of nuclear and particle physics with astrophysics by obtaining high quality data from increasingly refined experiments. In the limit of the current experimental search windows, expected signals from the dark matter and neutrino interactions are extremely low. To search such unexplored parameter space, extremely low-background detectors are highly required. Many experimental search groups have developed advanced techniques to carry out competitive, beyond-state-of-the-art level ultra-rare-event searches.
Material purifications and low radioactivity measurements (assays) are two of the most important axes for successful development of low-background detectors. We would like to collect and share the recent advances on the low-background technique applicable for the rare event search experiments.
