The success of seeds enables plants to colonize various habitats on the earth, covering harsh environments ranging from saline intertidal zones to extremely arid deserts. Even in the highest mountain Himalaya, seeds of Desideria himalayensis were found to establish seedlings at the elevation of 6212 m.
The final success of a seed to become a seedling is dependent upon whether it is able to complete germination in the right place at the right time. Various strategies are adopted by seeds to survive the processes of maturation, dispersal, seed burial, and predation, before they eventually become a true plant. Exploration of the multiplex seed behavior and knowledge about the underlying mechanisms is fundamental for us to understand the success of plants on the planet.
Despite the fundamental roles of seed behavior in plant persistence and ecosystem diversity, our knowledge of seed behavior in response to various types of uncommon environments remains limited. This Research Topic focuses on seed behavior in different environments, aiming at bringing together papers to answer questions relating in particular to: (1) interesting seed behavior of dispersal, dormancy, and germination in extreme and uncommon environments, such as floods, deserts, fires, etc.; (2) ecological significance of various seed behaviors in response to these extreme environments; and (3) evolutionary perspectives of diverse seed behavior in the plant kingdom.
Novel ideas and syntheses of recent progress in seed behavior are welcome. We encourage the submission of Original Research papers, as well as Reviews, Perspectives, General Commentary and Brief Research Reports encompassing, but not limited to the following topics:
- Diversity of seed behavior in various environments, such as floods, deserts, fires, etc;
- Diversity of seed bank strategies in response to various environments;
- Mechanisms underlying the multiplex seed behavior;
- Evolution of the diverse seed behavior.
