The unconventional natural gas usually refers to coalbed methane, shale gas, tight sandstone gas, and natural gas hydrate, which differs from the conventional natural gas in occurrence and accumulation mechanisms of hydrocarbons. They are receiving increasing attention in the past decades due to the great demand for energy and promoting effect for human economic and social development. Since North America has acquired enormous success in the development of unconventional natural gas resources, their exploration and development have been a hot topic in the academia and industrial community in quite recent years. An improved understanding of unconventional natural gas from macroscopic to microscopic scales is important for the accurate prediction of gas resources as well as the enhancement of production.
This research topic aims to summarize the latest research results on unconventional natural gas and to address the scientific issues associated with the exploration and exploitation of unconventional natural gas.
