Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide. In addition to the economic impacts related to screening, early diagnosis, and treatment, there are psychological and social impacts on patients who suffer from the disease. From the 1960s onwards, the introduction of silicone implants in the surgical treatment of the disease, associated with early diagnosis, chemotherapy evolution, and immunological therapies, revolutionized the management of these patients. The introduction of silicone implants allowed repairing surgical techniques, which permitted minimization of the psychological impacts reported in mastectomies.
However, with the silicone implant reparatory surgery popularization, side effects of this procedure have been reported. Breast implant illness (BII) and breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) are the most common complications discussed in the literature. Currently, the topic is quite controversial, which culminated in an official position on the subject by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2020.
The goal of the Research Topic is to open a multidisciplinary discussion about the current controversies regarding silicone implants. We aim to address these devices' technological developments, discuss the silicone disease's current status, and present the alternatives for reconstructive surgeries without implants, such as microsurgical breast reconstruction flaps.
Original studies, literature reviews, and case series that address the topic and its current controversies will be welcome to the issue, such as:
- Breast Reconstruction Surgery - DIEP Flap, SGAP Flap, PAP Flap, SIEA Flap, ICAD Flap.
- Silicone Breast Implants – new technologies.
- Breast implant illness (BII): current status and diagnosis.
- Implant fibrous capsules: anatomopathological assessment techniques and the clinical relevance.
- The current status of BIA-ALCL: diagnosis, frequency, and treatment.
- Immune diseases related to silicone implants: diagnosis, clinical presentation, and treatment.
- The role of diagnostic imaging in the diagnosis and surgical planning of patients with breast cancer.
- Tumor immunohistochemical profile and surgical alternatives: personalized treatment of breast cancer
- Radiotherapy and the impact on silicone implants.
- Psychological impact of surgical treatments in breast cancer.
