Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a serious threat to human health. Although great progress has been made in the research of CVD, there are still many problems that need to be further studied. The cardiovascular system requires a dynamic balance between cell formation and death to maintain normal structure and function. Pyroptosis is a form of morphologically and mechanically unique programmed necrosis. It is characterized by pyroptosis-related proteins Gasdermins (GSDM) involved in the formation of pore membrane channels, cell membrane swelling and rupture, and release of inflammatory cytokines.
Recent studies have found that pyroptosis is involved in the progression of CVD, such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetic cardiomyopathy, and heart failure. Although the role of oxidative stress and pyroptosis is well established, exact mechanisms and prevention strategies are far from successful. Clarifying the mechanism of pyroptosis in cardiovascular dysfunction will facilitate the development of precise therapeutic strategies for CVD.
In this Research Topic, we aim to establish a forum to present current advances regarding the cellular and physiological mechanisms, pathophysiological prevention strategies, and clinical consequences of pyroptosis in CVD, as well as explore the interactive effect of inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and pyroptosis. Besides, we would like to summarize the present knowledge about molecular mechanisms and drug research of NLRP3 inflammasome-induced pyroptosis in cardiovascular dysfunction. Review and original research articles are both welcome.
