Fungi are exotic and fantastic microorganisms that thrive in the most contrasting environments, establishing a myriad of ecological interactions. Considering the nature of their interactions with humans or other animals, fungi can be viewed as friends or foes.
From this scenario, a huge interest of studying human pathogenic fungi has emerged, whose main focuses can be highlighted by three pillars: the alarming level of fungal diseases of worldwide concern, the limited efficacy of antifungal drugs, and the impressive increase of antifungal resistance.
In the context of the present Topic Research, the main goal is to address questions involving the molecular biology at the level of transcriptomic reprograming of the fungal-host interplay; the host immune response upon fungal infection; the mechanisms of how fungi evade the host defenses using their repertoire of virulence attributes; approaches toward the development of new therapeutic agents as well as the repurpose of drugs already existing, among others.
To accomplish these objectives, we invite scientists to contribute with original research reporting significant findings in the biology and the host-interplay of medically important fungal pathogens, as well as review and mini-review articles in this field.
This topic will deal with research articles, reviews or mini reviews of interest including, but not limited to the following aspects:
o Fungal virulence attributes and its implications in host-evasion.
o Emergence of novel pathogenic fungal species.
o Insights about mechanisms of fungal resistance to antifungals.
o New tools to improve our understanding of fungal virulence attributes.
o New antifungal drugs development.
o Cells and animal models used in fungal-host interplay studies.
o Host reprograming towards a protective immune response.
