We are pleased to announce this Research Topic that is organized in collaboration with the organizers of the 2022 International Symposium on Smart Cities Challenges, Technologies and Trends (SCCTT-2022).

A smart city is a highly intelligent and advanced city in terms of infrastructure, modern architecture, smart communications, and business solutions. Smart Cities are citizen-friendly, offering world-class intelligent facilities, using highly efficient modern technologies and information technologies. A smart city takes care of its every citizen's needs effectively. It has improved transport facilities, environmental initiatives, developed hospitals, and other government plans and facilities thereby enhancing the quality of life for its residents. Some of its main elements are: Smart Electricity Supply and Power Grid, Smart water supply, Solid Waste Management, Smart Sanitation, Smart Housing, Smart Public Transport, Green Communications, Sustainable Environment, Good Governance, Smart Health and Education, Better Security of the Citizens.

The main purpose of the event and the associated themed article collection is to create awareness about the role of smart cities in the future. This event emphasizes the role of academic institutes and industries in highlighting the importance of smart cities for a better quality of living. This Research Topic will provide a platform for academicians, researchers, and industry experts to present their ideas, experiences, and work about smart cities to all the participants of the event. We hope to receive research papers that stress the social, behavioral, technical, economic, and environmental impacts of the introduction of smart city applications and services. The collection should bring a deeper understanding of the latest trends and challenges in Smart Cities technology and how to work together to build cost-effective solutions to problems faced by people in cities and metros.
