Frontiers in Sustainable Cities aims to develop a multi-disciplinary academic approach to life in contemporary and future urban environments. The journal publishes rigorously peer-reviewed, cutting-edge research on a broad range of topics, from engineering and urban studies to social sciences, with a focus on achieving sustainable living processes within future urban landscapes (in line with SDGs). To achieve resilience, environmental health, people’s inclusion, equality and healthy living in the face of the severe economical and environmental challenges facing the world today, international collaboration across all disciplines is required, including aspects on energy engineering, human geography and economics, architecture, governance and political science, public health, natural and behavioural science. Our journal’s key sections cover varied specialties and bring together prominent scholars, policy makers and key opinion leaders. Led by an outstanding Editorial Board of international experts, this new multidisciplinary open-access journal is at the forefront of disseminating and communicating scientific knowledge and impactful discoveries to researchers, academics and the general public worldwide.

The specialty sections of Frontiers in Sustainable Cities welcome submission of the following article types: Brief Research Report, Case Report, Community Case Study, Correction, Editorial, Focused Review, Frontiers Commentary, General Commentary, Hypothesis and Theory, Letter to the Editor, Methods, Mini Review, Opinion, Original Research, Perspective, Policy and Practice Reviews, Policy Brief, Review, Specialty Grand Challenge, Systematic Review and Data Report.
When submitting a manuscript to Frontiers in Sustainable Cities, authors must submit the material directly to one of the specialty sections. Manuscripts are peer-reviewed by the Associate and Review Editors of the respective specialty section.
Articles published in the specialty sections above will benefit from the Frontiers impact and tiering system after online publication. Authors of published original research with the highest impact, as judged democratically by the readers, will be invited by the Chief Editor to write a Frontiers Focused Review - a tier-climbing article. This is referred to as "democratic tiering". The author selection is based on article impact analytics of original research published in the Frontiers specialty journals and sections. Focused Reviews are centered on the original discovery, place it into a broader context, and aim to address the wider community across all of Sustainable Cities.
