It causes a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in the formation of scar tissue (adhesions, fibrosis) within the pelvis and other parts of the body.
The condition is thought to affect approximately 10% of the adult female population. It is the second most common gynaecological condition, behind Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and one of the leading causes of infertility in women.
The most common clinical signs of endometriosis are menstrual irregularities, chronic pelvic pain (CPP), dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and infertility. Symptoms of endometriosis often affect the psychological and social functioning of patients. For this reason, endometriosis is considered as a disabling condition that may significantly compromise social relationships, sexuality and mental health.
