Pediatric psychology is a multidisciplinary field addressing cognitive, behavioral, psychological and motor domains of neurodevelopment, both in normal and in atypical population. Indeed, the scientific research in this section aims to investigate the cognitive-behavioral phenotype in the neurodevelopmental field; a further objective is to investigate efficacy of pharmacological and behavioral interventions in promoting adaptive growth in children and a better quality of life in parents and siblings. Pediatric psychology has an impressive clinical and research history, mainly considering its relatively short existence. The area includes different scientific methods, such as clinical interventions, online trainings, occupational therapies and naturalistic interventions. The main objective is to support evidence-based interventions in different conditions. Quantitative and qualitative methods are equally valued for their contribution to the field.
The Research Topic aims to both characterize the cognitive-behavioral trajectories and to investigate the efficacy of specific interventions in child developmental disability. Interventions may include novel pharmacological strategies, cognitive-behavioral interventions, psychotherapy, psychological and psychoeducative techniques, occupational therapy, as well as a combination of different approaches.
Intellectual disability is characterized by signi?cant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior as expressed in conceptual, social, and practical adaptive skills. It is diagnosed before age of 18, but the severity may change over the time and after proper interventions. As ID has great impact on patients and their families and as better outcomes are associated with a better quality of life both in children and in parents, studies on the efficacy of structured and tailored interventions are urgent. Works on applied and basic research, investigating the clinical, cognitive, perceptual, sensory, social, moral, practical, educational, pharmacological treatment in ID both in idiopathic and in genetic conditions are welcomed. Case-series and case-reports longitudinally illustrating specific etiologies and cognitive-behavioral phenotypes are appreciated, too.
