Gestational diabetes mellitus is one of the most common pregnancy-related complications. Gestational diabetes mellitus poses a significant threat to maternal health and offspring development, including shoulder dystocia, preterm birth, maternal hypertension and ischemic heart disease, constituting a major public health crisis. Given the serious adverse outcomes of gestational diabetes mellitus, there is an urgent need to further explore new prediction tools of early pregnancy. The exact reasons for the development of gestational diabetes mellitus remain inconclusive. Pathological mechanisms underlying gestational diabetes mellitus have been mainly attributed to β cell impairment. However, the underlying mechanisms of gestational diabetes mellitus have not been elucidated. In identifying risk factors and biomarkers in early pregnancy can provide more basis for clinical diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus in the future.

This Research Topic aims to summarize original research articles, reviews, and opinion pieces that explore the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus, influencing factors of gestational diabetes mellitus, and the relationship between gestational diabetes mellitus and key health outcomes. In identifying risk factors and biomarkers in early pregnancy can provide more basis for clinical diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus in the future.

We welcome a series of original research, review, synthesis, and systematic review articles from researchers in the field covering (but not limited to) the following topics:

• Current epidemiology of gestational diabetes mellitus in different regions and populations worldwide.
• Factors influencing gestational diabetes mellitus.
• Key health outcomes associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (e.g., preterm birth, Metabolomics).
• Interventions to improve gestational diabetes mellitus.
• Identify biomarkers of gestational diabetes mellitus.

Keywords: Gestational diabetes mellitus, Influence factors, Biomarkers, Metabolomics, Key health outcomes
