Oesophageal cancer, namely oesophageal adenocarcinoma, remains extremely difficult to treat with an overall 5-year survival of approximately 20 %. The modern contest remains between trimodal neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy versus chemotherapy and surgery, and more contemporaneously, immunotherapies in the multimodal paradigm.
The immune system is known to have a significant impact on the development and dissemination of neoplastic processes. This is coupled with the hypothesis that the immune system has a significant impact on post-operative outcomes and the development of metastatic disease burden, with dual and trimodal immunotherapies in conjunction with conventional therapies garnering support, and the ideal timing of regimens ye tot be elucidated.
The goal of this topic is to add to the current body of literature for the use of immunotherapy not only in the second and third-line setting but also for the curative treatment strategy for oesophageal cancer. This will be done by reviewing and summarising current literature as well as translational studies.
