Algae and cyanobacteria have been genetically engineered to efficiently regulate their photosynthesis process hence converting light and carbon dioxide to biofuels and nutritional products for the planet. The major and significant resource that the algal and cyanobacterial cells utilize in this process is their plasticity of carbon and nitrogen metabolism. The cells are flexible hence they can distribute intracellular carbon and nitrogen fluxes towards the target products as well as they can adapt to any environmental or genetic alterations. However, the nature of their carbon/nitrogen metabolism plasticity and its impacts on their effective photosynthetic regulation hence the production of target products still require more robust investigations. New insights and methods need to be developed to logically re-investigate the photosynthetic carbon fluxes throughout primary metabolism in genetically engineered algae and cyanobacteria. Therefore, this research topic aims to develop collections to explore the regulatory mechanisms of the metabolic network by shedding light on photosynthetic carbon and nitrogen metabolism which may help in improving the production of biofuel and nutritional products from algae and cyanobacteria.
