Genetic Modification of Cardiac Tissue

About this Research Topic

The heart is subject to a myriad of molecular and genetic changes in the disease state but, the details and impact of these changes are poorly understood. With the advent of gene editing tools and novel protein-modification detection methods, molecular changes in heart cells and organelles can now be linked to the observed phenotypic changes and function in the whole heart. These new tools range from the use of transgenic animal models, silencing of gene products with temporal and spatial control, and introduction of foreign constructs to monitor cell physiology. In addition, powerful proteomics methods are being used to uncover protein modifications involved with disease progression. This Research Topic aims to assemble cutting-edge research in the field of cardiovascular medicine that covers recent discoveries on manipulation of cardiac cell genomes and altered protein function occurring in the disease state. Emphasis will be on the important roles of calcium signaling, free radical homeostasis, metabolic maladaptation, and contractile dysfunction in heart disease. The Topic Editors welcome original research, perspectives, hypothesis and theory, general commentaries, opinion, case reports, mini-reviews and methods articles to be submitted to this Research Topic.
