Retroperitoneal tumors are primarily managed through surgical intervention due to their complex anatomy and potential for significant morbidity. These tumors, encompassing both benign forms and aggressive malignancies such as liposarcomas and leiomyosarcomas, present unique challenges for surgeons. Diagnosis and treatment are complicated by their deep-seated location and nonspecific symptoms, which often lead to late detection. Despite advances in imaging and minimally invasive techniques, surgical resection remains the cornerstone of treatment, yet it is associated with high rates of local recurrence and perioperative complications. While some strides have been made with new imaging modalities and molecular insights contributing to preoperative planning, standardized surgical guidelines are still necessary to improve patient outcomes.

This Research Topic aims to highlight the latest advancements in surgical techniques for the treatment of retroperitoneal tumors. We seek to explore cutting-edge surgical methods that achieve radical tumor resection while preserving critical bodily structures, thereby minimizing patient morbidity. By examining innovative approaches like en bloc resection, compartmental surgery, and nerve-sparing techniques, we aim to refine surgical protocols that enhance tumor clearance and preserve quality of life. This initiative also aims to integrate perioperative care improvements and multidisciplinary approaches in creating standardized surgical guidelines, facilitating more effective and sustainable outcomes for patients.
