The field of construction and facilities management plays a pivotal role in shaping the built environment, particularly in the context of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recent research, such as that by Opoku (2024), has highlighted the intricate link between the built environment and the SDGs, structured around the 5Ps: people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnerships. Despite significant advancements, there remain critical gaps in understanding how construction and facilities management can more effectively contribute to the 3Ps—Planet, Prosperity, and Partnership.
Current studies, including those by Klungseth et al. (2022, 2023), have shown that the adoption of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) within the Facilities Management (FM) sector supports the realization of SDG 9 (industry, innovation, and infrastructure). However, there is a pressing need for more comprehensive research to explore the full potential and limitations of these technologies and strategies in achieving broader sustainability goals.
This Research Topic aims to encourage the publication of studies that investigate the roles of construction and facilities in the built environment concerning the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and their contribution to Planet, Prosperity, and Partnership. Specifically, it seeks to answer questions about how sustainable practices in construction and facilities management can improve environmental, economic, and social outcomes. The research will also test hypotheses related to the effectiveness of current standards and technologies in promoting sustainability within the built environment.
To gather further insights into the roles of construction and facilities in achieving the 3Ps, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Sustainable construction practices and their impact on environmental sustainability.
- The role of digitalization and smart technologies in facilities management.
- Case studies on the implementation of SDGs in construction and facilities management.
- The economic benefits of sustainable facilities management.
- Strategic partnerships and collaborations for sustainable development.
- The influence of international standards on local construction practices.
- Empirical studies on the social impact of sustainable built environments.
- Theoretical frameworks for integrating SDGs into construction and facilities management.
