Buildings are designed to maintain a comfortable indoor environment despite the harsh outdoor conditions. The built environment faces all kinds of extreme climates like extreme temperatures, high altitude, high humidity, contaminated environment, heavy wind, etc. This Research Topic intends to cover the latest research related to indoor environmental quality and energy performance in buildings under extreme environments. Review papers and original research papers (numerical or empirical) that cover the design and development of passive and active building strategies in these extreme settings will be considered for this article collection.
The objectives of this Research Topic include, but are not limited to:
• Providing the researchers and practitioners a platform to disseminate their most recent findings and innovations on building performance in extreme environments;
• Demonstrating innovative technologies and industry standards for developing and managing acceptable built environments in challenging conditions;
• Supporting the development of passive and active systems that are reliable, durable, and effective in harsh environments;
• Enhancing the safety and quality of life of occupants who live and work in such harsh climatic regions;
• Encouraging collaboration amongst experts in building performance to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.
Keywords:
Building performance, Indoor environmental quality, Passive strategies, Active strategies, Energy efficiency, Climate change
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
