Functional Neurological Disorders (FND) and Functional Dissociative Seizures (FDS) represent a complex intersection between the fields of neurology and psychiatry. Historically, FDS were referred to as psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES), a term that has been used for the past three decades to describe seizures with a psychogenic origin, confirmed as non-epileptic through Video-Electroencephalogram (VEEG) monitoring. Despite their prevalence in epilepsy centers, FDS are not caused by the electrical disturbances typical of epileptic seizures, highlighting a significant gap in understanding their pathophysiology and treatment. Recent studies have identified a strong correlation between FDS and trauma, post-traumatic stress, and other psychiatric conditions, suggesting these as key etiopathogenic factors. However, FDS remain underdiagnosed and underestimated in various regions, underscoring the need for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The integration of psychological and psychiatric assessments in epilepsy centers has begun to shed light on the mental health aspects of FDS, yet there remains a pressing need for further research to refine treatment approaches and improve patient outcomes.

This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive review of Functional Dissociative Seizures, fostering a deeper understanding among neurologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists. By bridging neurological insights with psychiatric care, this Research Topic seeks to address the multifaceted nature of FDS. Key objectives include exploring the pathophysiology of FDS, examining the role of trauma and psychiatric conditions in their development, and evaluating current and potential treatment strategies.
