In the current aging world, cognitive decline has profound impacts on both individuals and society. Recent research focuses on understanding cognitive aging from various perspectives, including describing the characteristics of age-related cognitive changes in both healthy individuals and those with mental and neurodegenerative diseases, identifying environmental and social factors that can improve cognitive abilities during aging, and revealing the neural network and functional mechanism of cognitive aging using animal models. This special issue aims to delve into various aspects of cognitive health in aging populations and the diverse interventions aimed at promoting cognitive well-being. In this article collection, we invite both empirical and review papers that address the research directions mentioned above.
We also welcome subtopics addressing, but not limited to:
- Neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, dementia etc.)
- Prolonged disorders of consciousness (caused by trauma, stroke, hypoxic encephalopathy etc.)
- Mental diseases (depression, mutism, schizophrenia etc.)
We encourage:
- Defining typical indicators and emerging biomarkers of cognitive aging including epigenetic features of aging, such as the correlation between DNA methylation and aging, and the causal relationship with brain age, cognitive behavioral representations of aging, and degenerative neurological diseases
- Neuroimaging of aging, including MRI, PET, SPET and novel molecular imaging analysis methods
- Physical/sports exercise and its impact on cognitive function in aging populations
- Cognitive training programs and their effectiveness in improving cognitive abilities
- Other intervention techniques (e.g., DBS, TMS, TUS etc.) targeting cognitive enhancement in older adults
- Treatment strategies for cognitive impairments in patients (e.g., with neurodegenerative diseases, pDOC, depression etc.)
- Animal research elucidating the neurobiological mechanisms underlying cognitive aging
