Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive, innovative technique widely used in treating superficial cancers, various dermatological conditions, and microbial infections. This therapy utilizes the interaction between light, oxygen, and photosensitive agents to generate reactive oxygen species that selectively target and eradicate harmful cells and pathogens. Despite its numerous advantages over traditional therapies—such as rapid action, precise control, and minimal drug resistance—challenges persist, notably the limited depth of light penetration and suboptimal selectivity of photosensitizers towards diseased cells.
This Research Topic aims to explore new frontiers in the development and application of photosensitive agents to enhance the effectiveness and scope of photodynamic therapy. The goals include assessing the latest natural and synthetic photosensitizing compounds, understanding their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, integrating cutting-edge technologies to uncover their working mechanisms, and evaluating their therapeutic potentials and synergies with other treatments.
To further enhance our understanding and application of PDT, this Research Topic will cover a broad, yet focused spectrum of research areas. We aim to deepen research into:
The current global research status and emerging trends in photosensitive agents.
Optimizing the pharmacokinetics and dynamics of these agents.
Advanced technologies for studying the mechanisms of action of photosensitive agents.
Exploring new biological effects and identifying therapeutic targets through multi-omics approaches.
Developing drug delivery systems that enhance the selectivity and efficiency of PDT.
Approaches to integrate PDT with other therapeutic strategies to achieve enhanced synergistic effects.
Innovative methods to address current limitations in PDT applications.
Projecting future directions and potential novel applications of photosensitive agents in PDT.
Contributions can be made in the form of original research, systematic reviews, methodology articles, case studies, clinical trial reports, brief research reports, opinion articles, technology reports, data reports, policy and practice reviews.
