The study of odontogenic infections as complications arising from dental caries has gained considerable attention in recent years. Despite advancements in dentistry and diagnostic methods, understanding the microbial role in the development of dental caries and subsequent infections remains pivotal. Dental caries is a widespread human disease influenced by multiple factors, primarily microbial, sugar, and biofilm dependencies. It is well-documented that microbial proliferation in decayed tooth tissues and periodontal pockets in periodontitis are the root causes of odontogenic infections. These infections are prevalent in the soft tissues of the head and neck and can also emerge from surgical interventions and trauma, highlighting the need for advanced research in oral microbiology.

This Research Topic aims to shed light on the latest innovations in oral microbiology, emphasizing the role of the microbiome in developing caries and odontogenic infections. Additionally, it seeks to address the challenges modern dentists face when treating these conditions. A crucial objective is to explore new avenues for antimicrobial usage in dentistry and provide robust evidence for their application in preventing and treating dental caries and related complications, including odontogenic infections.

To gather further insights into odontogenic infections and dental caries, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• Use of antibiotics, antiseptics, and substances with antimicrobial properties for treatment
• Sensitivity of oral microbial agents to antimicrobials and overcoming antimicrobial resistance
• Qualitative and quantitative composition of oral microbiome under caries and infections
• Changes in the microbiome and microbial imbalance under caries and infections
