The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) has risen exponentially over the past few decades and is now considered one of the most significant global public health challenges. Lifestyle-related factors, alongside aging populations and genetic predispositions, are primary drivers in the development and progression of T2D. Among these, unhealthy eating habits play a crucial role in the etiology and progression of T2D. Therefore, it is logical to prioritize food, nutrition, and diet in the prevention and management of this disease.

This Research Topic will focus on exploring the intricate relationships among whole diets, dietary components, lifestyle factors, and the risk of T2D as well as its progression. We welcome both original and review articles that employ a wide range of methodologies. These methodologies may include, without being restricted to, epidemiological studies, human intervention trials, clinical trials, in vitro experiments using both human and animal cells, animal studies, and secondary data analyses based on large, nationally representative datasets. By including a diversity of research approaches, we aim to foster a comprehensive understanding of T2D.

Submissions that examine the challenges and solutions for improving adherence to dietary guidelines or recommendations for T2D self-management across diverse populations in various global settings are encouraged.
