Bioengineering, which allows the investigation of biological tissues using innovative techniques, has been hugely advanced in recent years with the rise of technology, medicine, and resources. Looking at the literature, there has been a significant increase in developing approaches focused on improving healthcare in the last decade. These strategies are mainly oriented to enhance the understanding of the mechanical response of healthy biological tissues, the mechanisms that may lead to pathological conditions, and the interaction between medical devices and biological tissues. Moreover, the interest in developing innovative procedures to manufacture medical devices, such as 3D printing technology and new biomaterials, has increased widely. Finally, in the view of realizing a design that improves patient comfort and minimizes waste with cost savings in material and manufacturing processes, optimizing medical devices represents a new field of great interest.

The advancement in bioengineering and the continued development of new trends allow us to increase our fundamental knowledge of healthy and pathological biological tissues and open new applications to use in clinical practice to improve the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies.

The scope of the present Research Topic is to highlight progress and recent trends in bioengineering and their possible applications to improve the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies. This Research Topic gathers new insights from the 13th Annual Meeting of the European Society of Biomechanics (Pescara Italy October 3-4, 2024). This conference brings together researchers from different research institutes each year and offers an excellent environment for researchers to share recent advances. During this edition of the conference particular attention is devoted to dental biomechanics.
