Such limitations not only lead to prolonged waiting times for essential surgeries but also significantly heighten the likelihood of surgical complications. This increases patient morbidity and mortality rates and is exacerbated by logistical issues such as geographical remoteness and inadequate transportation infrastructure, which hinder effective emergency surgical responses.

This Research Topic aims to rigorously examine and address the complexities of upgrading surgical care systems in the Global South. It seeks to investigate comprehensive strategies for the enhancement of surgical training, the adoption of new surgical technologies, and the improvement of surgical facility infrastructures. Essential to this objective is the development of scalable surgical training programs tailored to the unique needs of the Global South, fostering a cycle of continuous improvement and learning for surgical teams.
