Viruses, the most abundant and diverse biological entities on Earth, play a critical role in shaping global health landscapes. Despite their ubiquity, viral dynamics in domestic carnivores like dogs and cats remain underexplored, which is significant given these animals' close interactions with humans. This interface of frequent contact heightens the risk of zoonotic diseases, evidenced by pathogens like rabies, rotaviruses, and more recently, coronavirus strains in pets. The inter-species transmission potential raises critical public health concerns, necessitating a broader understanding of the virome encountered in household pets.

This Research Topic aims to elucidate the molecular, phylogenetic, epidemiological, and evolutionary aspects of emerging and known viruses within a broad array of domestic carnivores worldwide. This collection aims to integrate more diverse data sets, thereby enriching our understanding of how zoonotic pathogens evolve and spread across different environments and species barriers. Key objectives include investigating the lineage and mutation patterns of viruses like hepadnavirus, hepevirus, and parvovirus, and their health implications for both animals and human communities.

To gather further insights, this topic intends to study the virome across different organs and tissues such as the intestine, spleen, liver, serum, blood, and lungs of domestic carnivores. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
