Remote sensing technology is a key technology and an important tool to help realize the sustainable development of marine resources and the environment. Remote sensing is playing an increasing role in global change research, resource investigation, environmental monitoring and prediction. In the process of maintaining the sustainable development of marine resources and the environment, remote sensing technology will not only greatly promote the development of information science and technology, space science and technology, environmental science and technology and earth science, but also further promote the intersection and integration of different disciplines. Ocean remote sensing technology provides a robust platform for the acquisition of marine basic data, and plays a major role in issues such as the construction of new ports, the opening of new channels, offshore oil exploitation and coastal ecological governance and protection.

The goal of this research topic is to investigate the diverse areas that remote sensing can contribute to in understanding coastal processes. The special issue will publish new techniques for analyzing remote sensing data in the coastal zone, and show how these can be used, along with numerical models, to exploit coastal resources and for environmental protection.

The focus of this Research Topic is on studies that use remote sensing techniques to explore coastal oceanic processes. It calls for original and novel articles on any of the following research topics:

• Coastal circulation

• Wave-current interaction

• Ocean-atmosphere interaction

• Mesoscale and sub-mesoscale eddies

• Ocean modelling and data assimilation

• Inversion algorithms for extracting ocean currents, waves, sediment, wind, temperature, salinity, shallow water topography and coastlines etc.

• Forecasting of coastal oceanic parameters (such as tidal water levels, ocean currents, sediment concentrations, and waves) based on machine learning

• Chemical/ biogeochemical/ ecological processes
