Eosinophils, traditionally recognized for their role in allergic diseases and parasitic infections, have emerged as pivotal players in the pathophysiology of autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. Recent advances in immunology have uncovered their complex interactions with immune cells, cytokine networks, and tissue environments, revealing their dual roles as mediators of inflammation and regulators of immune homeostasis. Despite these insights, significant gaps remain in understanding the precise mechanisms by which eosinophils contribute to disease initiation, progression, and resolution in autoimmune and inflammatory contexts.

This research topic aims to consolidate cutting-edge research and reviews to provide a comprehensive overview of the multifaceted roles of eosinophils in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. By doing so, it seeks to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and inspire novel therapeutic strategies targeting eosinophil-associated pathways.

We invite submissions of original research articles, reviews, and short communications that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:

1. Eosinophil Biology and Immune Regulation

- Novel insights into eosinophil development, differentiation, and activation.

- Crosstalk between eosinophils and other immune cells in autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.

2. Eosinophils in Autoimmune Diseases

- Mechanistic studies on eosinophil involvement in diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease.

- The role of eosinophils in tissue-specific autoimmune disorders, including thyroiditis and type 1 diabetes, Kimura disease, EGPA, HES, ABPA, EGID, Skin manifestations of eosinophilic disorders.

3. Eosinophils in Chronic Inflammatory Disorders

- Contributions of eosinophils to chronic inflammatory diseases such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, and eosinophilic esophagitis.

- Eosinophil-driven fibrosis and tissue remodeling in inflammatory diseases.

4. Therapeutic Targeting of Eosinophils

- Advances in biologics and small molecules targeting eosinophil function.

- The potential of eosinophils as biomarkers for disease progression or therapeutic response.

5. Eosinophils in Unconventional Roles

- Emerging evidence on eosinophils in neuroinflammation, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.

- Protective versus pathogenic roles of eosinophils in different inflammatory contexts.

By gathering a diverse array of studies and perspectives, this special issue aims to deepen our understanding of eosinophils and their complex roles in health and disease. We encourage submissions from researchers in immunology, clinical medicine, molecular biology, and related fields.
