Water resource management is critically challenged by increasing demands and environmental limitations, particularly within agriculture, where the purity and supply of water are essential. Microbial processes such as microbiologically induced precipitation and degradation present a novel approach in environmental biotechnology, offering solutions for treating and recycling water.

For instance, the use of bacteria for nitrate removal through denitrification helps reduce groundwater contamination, while microbial fuel cells purify wastewater by generating electricity as they break down organic matter. Algae-based systems also absorb heavy metals and nutrients, improving water quality. Agricultural wastewater, often loaded with pollutants, highlights the need for such innovative treatments capable of handling both organic and inorganic contaminants effectively.

This Research Topic aims to explore the extensive potential of microbial technologies in managing water resources. It will critically assess how microbial solutions can improve water treatment efficiencies, focusing particularly on their scalability and sustainability in various agricultural settings.

We invite contributions of Original Research, Review, Methods and Perspective articles that cover, but are not limited to, the following themes:

• Integration of microbial solutions in existing water management systems;

• Impact of microbial technologies on water resource management efficiency and sustainability;

• Advances in microbial degradation and precipitation processes;

• Utilization of engineered microbial consortia for bioremediation and water purification;

• Strategies for applying microbial solutions in specific agricultural settings.
