Organ-on-a-chip (OoC) and microfluidic technologies represent transformative advancements in biomedical research, leveraging biomaterials to create models that mimic human physiological responses. This Research Topic focuses on innovative biomaterials that enhance the functionality and biocompatibility of these systems, crucial for applications in diagnostics, pharmacogenomics, and disease modeling. Natural biomaterials like collagen and hyaluronic acid provide essential bioactivity reflective of extracellular matrices, while synthetic options like PDMS and PEG offer precise mechanical properties and durability. Advanced hybrids such as GelMA and alginate-PCL hydrogels integrate the advantageous traits of both, supported by 3D bioprinted structures, conductive polymers, and nanocomposites for overall improved performance.
