Living plant cells release submicron-sized structures known as plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs) into the extracellular space. These vesicles contain a liquid compartment enclosed by a biological membrane. PDEVs are isolated from conditioned media of in vitro plant cell cultures, including plant cell suspensions, hairy root and pollen cultures, apoplastic fluid, and plant exudates such as phloem and xylem sap. Although PDEVs share similarities with extracellular vesicles (EVs) from other organisms but are distinct in their cargo and biological roles.

Plant-derived nanoparticles (PDNPs) are a fascinating class of biomaterials that often include plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs). These nanoparticles are isolated from the homogenate of tissues or organs of edible plants and have a wide range of applications in biotechnology and health. One of the key advantages of PDNPs is their high yield and scalable production, making them increasingly popular for biotechnological applications. Leveraging their inherent function in molecular delivery, they can be utilized as natural carriers for various substances, including microRNA and small molecules, making them highly effective in delivering therapeutic agents and other bioactive compounds.

A recent development within the One Health approach highlights the recognition of a universal communication system based on extracellular vesicles (EVs). This approach underscores the interconnected health of plants, animals, and humans, and emphasizes the potential of PDNPs to facilitate cross-kingdom communication. PDNPs, derived from plant tissues, are gaining attention for their scalable production and broad application potential in biotechnology and One Health. By contributing to a holistic understanding of health and disease management across different species, they highlight the interconnectedness of our ecosystems, from agriculture to human health.

This Research Topic aims to showcase the cutting-edge research and developments in the field of PDEVs and PDNPs and their multidimensional applications across biotechnology and the One Health initiative.
