As the global population ages and chronic diseases become more prevalent, accompanying conditions such as wasting disorders are also growing in commonality. Wasting disorders such as cachexia and sarcopenia, are characterized by the loss of adipose and muscle tissue mass and function. These conditions often affect patients suffering from chronic diseases such as cancer, inflammatory diseases (ie heart failure, kidney disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as the natural aging process. Lipids play a central role in the development and progression of wasting disorders not only as structural components of cell membranes, but also as crucial players in energy metabolism, signaling pathways, and inflammation.

This Research Topic aims to explore the broad role of lipids in the pathophysiology of wasting disorders. Through the collection of relevant manuscripts, we hope to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms behind these disorders, ultimately paving the way for the development of improved preventative and therapeutic strategies.

- Metabolism of adipose and muscle tissues in disease and aging

- Role of lipids and lipid metabolites in disease and aging

- Identification of disease pathways underlying loss of adipose tissue and muscle function

- Pharmacological regulation of adipose tissue and muscle function
