Radiation therapy is a cornerstone in the management of head and neck cancers, employing high-energy ionizing radiation to target and destroy cancer cells. Despite its efficacy, radiation therapy is not entirely selective and also damages adjacent healthy tissues. This can lead to a spectrum of immediate and long-term complications, profoundly affecting patients' quality of life. Notable complications include radiation-induced plexopathy, mucositis, and neck fibrosis. The risk and severity of these complications are influenced by factors such as the total radiation dose, treatment duration, and the specific anatomical regions irradiated, each presenting unique challenges in patient care.

This Research Topic seeks to deepen understanding and advance strategies for managing radiation-induced complications in patients with head and neck cancers. We aim to compile a series of articles that explore the mechanisms, consequences, and management strategies for these complications, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

We welcome the submission of manuscripts on the following topics:

1. Radiation-induced plexopathy, particularly brachial plexopathy, arising from radiation damage to nerve plexuses in the neck and upper chest.
2. Oral mucositis resulting from radiation's cytotoxic effects on the oral mucosa.
3. Fibrosis and inflammation in the treated areas of the neck.

We encourage contributions from across preclinical and clinical fields of Oncology, Neuro-oncology, Radiation oncology and Pain Medicine to name a few.

The submissions should encompass a broad range of study types, including:

By compiling these studies, we hope to contribute to the evolving dialogue around improving care for patients affected by radiation therapy in head and neck cancers.
