The sensory systems profoundly impact cortical development, establishing and refining neural circuits through experience-driven and activity-dependent processes. Recent research consistently identifies sensory processing disruptions as significant early markers associated with neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Studies have demonstrated atypical responsiveness and abnormal wiring patterns in sensory cortical networks, suggesting that these disturbances may play a crucial role in the onset or progression of neurodevelopmental impairments. Despite these advancements, key questions remain unanswered concerning the underlying neural mechanisms by which sensory experiences shape cortical circuits, the interaction between typical sensory inputs and circuit maturation, and precisely how early sensory dysregulation contributes causally to cognitive and behavioral deficits observed in disorders such as ASD.

This Research Topic aims to investigate the neural developmental processes influenced by sensory experiences, toward clarifying the pathways through which sensory information and neural activity guide cortical organization. Additionally, it seeks to elucidate how alterations or aberrations in this sensory-dependent development can lead to or indicate the emergence of neurodevelopmental disorders. Crucial objectives include understanding the contributions of sensory-driven activity to typical maturation, the temporal dynamics of critical developmental periods, and the direct mechanistic relationships linking sensory system dysfunction to subsequent cognitive and behavioral impairments. Addressing these aims will enhance the identification of early diagnostic biomarkers and aid in designing targeted, sensory-based therapeutic interventions.
