Piezoelectric materials have emerged over recent years as promising multifunctional tools within the biomedical field, owing to their remarkable capacity to convert mechanical stimuli into electrical responses. This intrinsic property derives predominantly from their non-centrosymmetric crystalline structures and intrinsic polarizability, making them excellent candidates for diverse biomedical applications, including drug delivery, biosensing, therapeutic systems, tissue regeneration, and advanced theranostics. Recently, research on piezoelectric nanomaterials—such as zinc oxide (ZnO), lead zirconate titanate (PZT), and various perovskite-based structures—has demonstrated their robust functionality and utility across medical domains. Additionally, significant interest has been drawn to polymeric nanocomposites, notably polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), chitosan-based materials, and nano-fibrous scaffolds, which have emerged as potent alternatives addressing key limitations presented by powder-based piezoelectric materials. Despite these groundbreaking achievements, current piezoelectric biomedical technologies still encounter considerable challenges, particularly related to optimizing synthesis processes, ensuring long-term biocompatibility, scalability, stability, and integration challenges within clinical workflows. Therefore, a deeper understanding and systematic investigation into these challenges and their solutions are urgently required.

This Research Topic aims to gather the most recent breakthroughs, innovative methodologies, and critical insights surrounding the application of piezoelectric materials in biomedicine. The primary objective is to present comprehensive knowledge on recent technological advancements, explore solutions to existing limitations, and elucidate the role piezoelectric materials can play in revolutionizing healthcare practices. Specifically, this Research Topic will encourage studies examining the effectiveness, biosafety, and performance of piezoelectric biosensing, drug delivery systems, regenerative medicine applications, and integrated therapeutic-imaging (theranostic) platforms. Additionally, it will seek to illuminate potential impacts of piezoelectric technologies in boosting personalized medicine practices, improving diagnostic accuracy, and enhancing patient treatments.
