The field of research revolves around the migratory patterns and their fitness consequences for diadromous fish, particularly salmonids such as Pacific and Atlantic salmon, trout and chars, but also smelts, lampreys, galaxiids, anguillid eels, and others. The current state of knowledge reveals that the timing of migration to and from the sea is crucial for the survival and reproduction of these species. Their journey between freshwater and marine environments poses significant risks due to potential exposure to anthropogenic pressures, predators and environmental changes. Recent studies have employed acoustic telemetry, PIT tags, and scale and otolith analysis to monitor diadromous fish movement through these habitats, identifying and quantifying the effects of these factors on growth, survival and, ultimately, reproductive success following natal homing. However, gaps exist in our understanding of the complex interplay between these factors and how they impact different life stages and populations of diadromous fish.

The primary goal of this research topic is to deepen our understanding of the factors influencing migratory behavior, survival rates and reproductive consequences for diadromous fish. This goal includes exploring how biotic and abiotic factors influence migration success, how these factors impact different life stages and populations, and how anthropogenic pressures may be mitigated to improve population fitness. The research also aims to test hypotheses related to the effects of predation, water flow, river networks, and temperature on migration success, and the potential benefits of focused management actions.
