These biofilms are central to the development of prevalent oral diseases like dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Given that traditional methods such as mechanical cleaning and chemical treatments often fall short in entirely eradicating these resilient microbial communities, there's a pressing need for new solutions. This need is compounded by issues like antibiotic resistance and the potential for disturbing the oral microbial balance, fueled by overuse of broad-spectrum antimicrobials. Leading research in fields such as microbiology, nanotechnology, and biomaterials has recently pivoted towards crafting more efficient, sustainable ways to manage biofilms.

This Research Topic aims to push the boundaries of current dental practices by developing and refining advanced methodologies for the prevention and control of oral biofilms. The ultimate goal is to diminish the dependence on traditional antimicrobials, decrease resistance risks, and foster practices that support the ecological balance of oral health.
