Plant bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenes and alkaloids, are often described and studied due to their significant pro-health potential along with chronic disease prevention abilities. The naturally occurring compounds which can be find in fruits, vegetables and herbs are characterized by wide range of biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, cardioprotective, neuroprotective and much more. Research has increasingly highlighted their influence on metabolic pathways, gut microbiota composition, and immune function, linking regular consumption to reduced risk of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers.

As interest in functional foods and nutraceuticals grows, understanding the bioavailability, mechanisms of action, and long-term effects of these compounds becomes essential. This special issue explores the latest advances in the study of plant bioactives and their implications for human nutrition and health, aiming to bridge the gap between food science, clinical research, and public health. Significant point is also synergistic and antagonistic effects of the bioactives which can be observed when consumed as additives in new food assortment. Significant impact of plant bioactives is observed in the case of chronic diseases which due to their multifactorial character are hard to stop or slow down. In this case, multi-directional character of secondary plant metabolites plays significant role. Activities towards a few possible causes of disease is crucial for affective treatment.
