Anaerobic microbiology has become a critical field of study due to its extensive applications ranging from environmental management to biotechnology. The diverse roles of anaerobic microorganisms in ecosystems, including their ability to treat wastewater, produce biogas, and degrade pollutants, highlight their importance. Despite significant advances, the isolation, cultivation, and comprehensive analysis of these microbes remains challenging.

The advent of molecular and omics technologies has boosted forward our understanding, yet gaps in effectively applying this knowledge for practical applications persist.

With ongoing developments and debates regarding the best methodologies and frameworks to study these microorganisms, there is a robust demand for more focused research.

This Research Topic seeks to consolidate the latest advancements and foster innovations in the field of anaerobic microbiology, in collaboration with the 13th International Symposium on Anaerobic Microbiology (ISAM2025). We are aiming to highlight novel methodologies for the cultivation and analysis of anaerobes, underscore their biotechnological applications, and enhance our understanding of microbial processes in anoxic environments, covering all groups of anaerobic microbes. Additionally, it will explore the practical implications of anaerobic processes in environmental management and circular economy.

To gather further insights into the diverse and complex nature of anaerobic microbiology, we are encouraging congress attendees, as well as researchers who are unable to attend, to submit papers under the following topics:
