Biomedical research in liver diseases has traditionally depended on animal models, but ethical concerns and the quest for more relevant human data have driven a shift towards using New Approach Methodologies (NAMs). These methodologies, embracing in vitro, in silico, and minimally invasive techniques, are revolutionizing how we study chronic liver conditions like metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), and others. These conditions feature complex interactions between various cell types, where immune responses play significant roles. NAMs, such as 3D cell cultures and computational models, offer innovative ways to explore these interactions without relying heavily on animal testing.

This Research Topic aims to expand the use of NAMs in elucidating the role of the immune system in chronic liver diseases. By understanding the immune mechanisms contributing to liver inflammation, fibrosis, and cancer progression, researchers can better develop targeted treatments. Moreover, NAMs enable scientists to investigate immune pathways with unprecedented accuracy, enhancing our understanding of disease pathogenesis and therapeutic responses.
