The cerebral and cardiovascular systems are intricately linked, sharing common anatomical structures such as conduit and deep arteries that supply oxygen and essential nutrients. Both systems are susceptible to similar risk factors, including hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Previous studies have observed that elevated levels of cardiovascular biomarkers are correlated with decreased global cognition, executive functioning, and memory, as well as with progressive cognitive decline over time. Studies have also observed that mechanistically, vascular pathology can lead to chronic cerebral hypoperfusion, breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, and inflammation, which are likely precursors to neuronal death and neurodegeneration. Understanding these correlations is critical for developing comprehensive strategies to mitigate the impact of cardiovascular health on cognitive function.

We aim to address the significant impact of cardiovascular health on cognitive function. Despite the well-documented connections between cardiovascular risk factors and cognitive decline, there remains a gap in comprehensive strategies to mitigate these effects. This research aims to explore the mechanisms explaining these correlations. To achieve this, we want to focus on identifying specific cardiovascular biomarkers that are predictive of cognitive decline and developing targeted interventions to manage these biomarkers. Additionally, we want to investigate the efficacy of lifestyle modifications, pharmacological treatments, and other therapeutic approaches in preserving cognitive function in individuals at risk of cardiovascular diseases.

This Research Topic invites contributions that explore the intricate relationship between cardiovascular health and cognitive function. Specific themes of interest include:

• Mechanisms linking vascular and non-vascular pathologies to cognitive decline.

• Identification and validation of cardiovascular biomarkers, including radiological features, predictive of cognitive impairment.

• Interventions to manage cardiovascular risk factors and their impact on cognitive health, including lifestyle modifications and pharmacological treatments.

• Longitudinal studies examining the progression of cognitive decline in relation to cardiovascular health.
