A rapid increase in environmental concern in recent years has driven many challenges and sustainable practices in achieving carbon neutrality worldwide. To expedite the global shift towards sustainable energy, the integration of cutting-edge renewable conversion technologies, such as Power-to-X and X-to-Power, plays a critical role in the development of next-generation energy systems. On the other hand, as the demand for renewable energy continues to rise, biomass energy offers another reliable alternative compared to intermittent sources like wind and solar power. It provides essential support in balancing energy supply, particularly in addressing issues of intermittency and grid stability. Above all, there is great potential for creating a carbon-negative energy and fuel supply chain when coupling biogenic CO₂ capture and utilization technologies.

Nevertheless, optimal utilization of various renewable sources and enhancement of process conversion efficiency to maximize green energy and electro fuel productions are still an essential step toward a net-zero emission society.
In this regard, the technical feasibility, techno-economic viability, and environmental sustainability of innovative and next-generation Power-to-X or X-to-Power systems still need to be explored and optimized.

This research topic welcomes the submission of research that explores Power-to-X and/or X-to-Power technologies for renewable energy and e-fuel productions. Both experimental and simulation related cutting-edge research are welcome to contribute. In particular, we especially seek the manuscripts that focus on the utilization of biomass (e.g., lignocellulosic biomass, algal biomass, municipal solid waste, food waste, livestock manure, etc.) as feedstock across various Power-to-X and X-to-Power applications.
