The erosion of democratic norms raises substantial concerns about the future direction and influence of the global governance model established post-World War II. The U.S., once a democratic leader and proponent of global cooperation, has become increasingly isolationist under recent administrations. This change has led to the retreat from international commitments, with actions such as the withdrawal from WHO and restricting immigration, affecting the country's influence on the global stage. Meanwhile, in response, resistance movements and leftist political gains in nations like the UK and Canada have stirred hopes of countering the authoritarian tide, showcasing the complex dynamics of contemporary geopolitical landscapes.

This Research Topic aims to explore the interplay between increasing authoritarianism and the resilience of democracy worldwide.
