Plant-parasitic nematodes are among the most pervasive biotic threats to agricultural productivity, causing extensive yield losses globally and challenging the sustainability of food systems. Traditional management strategies, such as chemical nematicides and crop rotation, have offered limited and short-lived solutions, often accompanied by environmental and regulatory concerns. The advent of plant biotechnology, coupled with biological innovations, has opened new frontiers in the sustainable and targeted control of nematode pests, offering promise for the effective protection and enhancement of crop yields.

Recent advances in the genetic engineering of crop plants have enabled the development of nematode-resistant cultivars through the introduction or modulation of specific genes conferring enhanced defense responses. Strategies such as RNA interference (RNAi) technology, targeted genome editing (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9), and overexpression of anti-nematode proteins have shown substantial potential in disrupting nematode development, migration, and parasitism. Furthermore, transgenic plants expressing nematode-deterrent compounds, or exploiting natural resistance alleles identified through molecular approaches, offer a long-term and eco-friendly solution that aligns with sustainable crop production goals and supports the realization of SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).

Alongside genetic innovations, novel biological methods—including the deployment of microbial biocontrol agents, endophytes, and engineered beneficial rhizosphere organisms—are being integrated into nematode management strategies. These biological interventions not only suppress nematode populations via antagonistic interactions but also enhance plant immune responses and resilience, contributing to a holistic improvement in soil and plant health. Quantitative omics approaches, high-throughput phenotyping, and advanced molecular diagnostics are facilitating the discovery and validation of robust nematode resistance traits and the mechanisms underlying plant-microbe-nematode interactions.

This Research Topic seeks to bridge mechanistic understanding and technological innovation for nematode management. We welcome submissions addressing:

• The genetic and biotechnological engineering of crops for durable and broad-spectrum nematode resistance;

• Elucidation of the molecular and cellular dialogue between plants and nematodes, including immune signaling, effector recognition, and defense evasion strategies;

• The role of plant-associated microbiomes and engineered symbionts in nematode suppression and plant defense priming;

• Field evaluation and safety considerations of biotechnologically modified plants and biocontrol solutions.

We invite original research, reviews, meta-analyses, and technical advancements that collectively advance the sustainable management of nematodes and contribute to resilient agricultural systems, in support of responsible consumption, land stewardship (SDG 15), and global food security.
