Modern day is witnessing a revolution across the globe as the increased use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way people think about development. Recent trends are now turning to not only achieving development but also doing so in a sustainable manner. A major thrust area witnessing the need for sustainable development is healthcare. Lately, people have also been realising the need for catering to the social impacts of sustainable development in healthcare.

AI is an enabling tool that touches almost all facets of the healthcare domain. AI models ensure faster and more accurate diagnosis of various types of diseases based on collected unimodal/ multimodal data. Automatic patient appointment scheduling without AI software seems like a distant reality now. With everything moving towards digitalisation, electronic healthcare records come in quite handy. Similarly, numerous AI use cases support present-day healthcare. However, there are some pressing issues as well. We often think that the use of AI as a technology is enough to support a medical practitioner in decision-making. With various countries having different healthcare systems, some supported by insurance and others not, it's crucial to consider whether AI-enabled healthcare is affordable for everyone.

AI is being increasingly deployed for social good. Its use in ensuring various aspects of socio-economic, legal, governance, and compliance has been phenomenal. A lot of emphasis is being increasingly laid on maintaining a constant supply of green energy, smart nutrition, clean water, waste management, etc. AI is considered an indispensable tool that can bring intelligence and run-time data analysis for faster response. Hence, it is high time that the social impacts of the use of AI in healthcare are also realised and addressed. In fact, sustainable development in healthcare through the use of AI should go hand in hand with social development.
